Orissa bag 6 medals in Commonwealth chess

Chess players made Orissa proud again, bagging a total of six medals, including three golds in different age categories of the Parsvanath Commonwealth Championship, which concluded at Delhi today.
Woman International Master Padmini Rout, Sidhant Mohapatra and Sunyasakta Satpathy won the three gold medals in under-16 girls, under-12 boys and girls categories respectively. International Master Debasish Das (under-18 boys) and Adyasa Mahapatra (under-8 girls) secured a silver each, while Subhasis Barik (under-8 boys) claimed a bronze.

However, in the overall standings, featuring a total of 311 players, five from Orissa occupied places among top 100. Debasish emerged most successful among 14 Orissa players, finishing 24th. In the 11-round championship, four players from Orissa were able to register a notable win. Among them Anwesh Upadhyaya and Swayams Mishra shocked Woman Grand Master Kruttika Nadig (Maharashtra) in the sixth and fourth round respectively. Sidhant Mohapatra caused the biggest upset, defeating International Master Himanshu Sharma (Haryana) in the sixth round. Sunyasakta also caused a flutter, outwitting Woman International Master Lakshmi Sahiti (AP) in the 10th round.
